As per Dr. Katherine van Wormer domestic violence can be a driving force behind a divorce decision. According to him domestic violence can be a result of the patriarchal culture. But other factors such as alcohol and other drug use which removes inhibitions, stress related to global competition as reflected in employment, and psychological factors, may also be crucial factors.
Women are far more likely to be the primary sufferes than men. Stalking and marital rape are largely male-on-female attacks. Domestic violence is a major problem in U.S. and Canada. The problem arises when the psychological portrait of a male abuser turns to an insecure man, who is possessive of his wife/partner and who isolates her so he can control her. Typically, he has been abused in childhood. This man doesn’t know how to love and trust. If given proper counselling and guidance these people can turn to wonderful spouses ending the threat to the society called Domestic Violence.
